” Experience has shown that Americans have trouble setting aside money for retirement outside of employer-sponsored retirement plans, and an extremely effective way to increase savings is to require that employers offer retirement plans to employees. Housing policies that restricted the availability of mortgages in nonwhite communities and charged them higher interest than whites are having knock-on effects on retirement to this day. The truth is that ordinary Americans tend not to think about their retirement until they are too close to it to be able to do much about it.
