President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied a series of rumors about Melania Trump, saying the first lady is not close to death, did not have a face lift, is not divorcing him, and is not the victim of spousal abuse.
Reporters and photographers were barred from covering the event, but the first lady issued a statement on Monday evening about the ceremony.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied a series of rumors about Melania Trump, saying the first lady is not close to death, did not have a face lift, is not divorcing him, and is not the victim of spousal abuse.
The first lady has been largely absent from the public eye since undergoing a procedure last month at Walter Reed Medical Center to treat what her office described as “a benign kidney condition.”
Her especially low profile stoked a number of reports about the reason for her relative seclusion – and Trump on Wednesday attacked the media for the speculation.
“The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!” Trump wrote on Twitter.
He continued in a second post, stating that multiple reporters saw Melania Trump at the White House last week “walking merrily along.” Some reporters, however, have in fact noted seeing the first lady last week.
"…Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House last week walking merrily along to a meeting. They never reported the sighting because it would hurt the sick narrative that she was living in a different part of the world, was really ill, or whatever. Fake News is really bad!" Trump wrote.
Melania Trump did not make a public appearance for 25 days, long after she was released from the hospital for the medical procedure. The status of the president and first lady’s relationship has been thoroughly explored in the media, due to viral footage of Melania Trump appearing to swat away her husband’s hand and as allegations have piled up about Trump having engaged in extramarital affairs.
On May 30, the first lady used the official @FLOTUS account to deny there was anything wrong with her.
"I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the @WhiteHouse w my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!" she tweeted.
Melania Trump reemerged on Monday when appeared at a closed-door Memorial Day reception at the White House with the families of fallen members of the U.S. military.
Reporters and photographers were barred from covering the event, but the first lady issued a statement on Monday evening about the ceremony. “It was a privilege to welcome Gold Star Families to the White House today to recognize our nation’s fallen heroes and their families,” she said.
