Donald Trump Jr. on Thursday offered his father a piece of advice on his 72nd birthday: Don’t sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.
“I wouldn’t do it. I think it would be stupid,” Trump Jr. told the hosts of "Fox & Friends."
“I don’t think any proper lawyer would say, ‘Hey, you should go do it,’ because it’s not about collusion anymore,” the younger Trump added. “It’s about, ‘Can we get him to say something that may be interpreted as somewhat off or inaccurate, and after 50,000 questions, maybe you make a mistake, and that’s how we get you, and that’s ridiculous.”
The president in recent weeks has stepped up his attacks on the special counsel’s investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, as well as a related Justice Department probe meant to determine whether Trump obstructed justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey.
“There was no Collusion (it is a Hoax) and there is no Obstruction of Justice (that is a setup & trap),” Trump wrote on Twitter in May.
The president added Rudy Giuliani to his personal legal team in April, in the hope that the former New York City mayor could broker the conditions of a sit-down between Trump and Mueller. But allies of the president have repeatedly referred to such an interview as a “perjury trap” intended to unfairly ensnare Trump in unintentionally contradictory statements.
“Listen, I don’t trust these people as far as I can throw them," Trump Jr. said of the federal prosecutors carrying out Mueller’s probe. "You know, you can sit there and ask questions for 50 hours, for 100 hours, ask the same thing 1,000 times, and they’ll say, ‘Oh, the comma is different here. Now we got you.’ You know, the reality is the greatest investigative bodies in the world have been looking for two years – two years – and they have come up with nothing."
Trump Jr. also wished his father, who turned 72 on Thursday, a happy birthday, but admitted he wasn’t planning on sending any gifts to the commander in chief.
“I love you very much,” Trump Jr. said, turning to address the camera. “You’re getting absolutely no presents because I figured five grandchildren is enough, and what do you get the most powerful guy in the world? Anything is going to be a let-down."
