President Donald Trump offered his congratulations Friday to the Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals, calling team captain Alexander Ovechkin “a true superstar” and writing that Washington “is popping, in many ways.”
The Capitals won their first championship in franchise history Thursday night, winning the Stanley Cup finals in five games by virtue of a 4-3 road win over the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
“Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on their GREAT play and winning the Stanley Cup Championship,” the president wrote on Twitter. “Alex Ovechkin, the team captain, was spectacular – a true Superstar! D.C. is popping, in many ways. What a time!”
The president’s message to the Capitals comes days after he disinvited another champion, the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles, from a White House ceremony scheduled in their honor because, his administration said, the team was sending too small of a delegation to the event. Instead, Trump turned the ceremony earlier this week into one honoring the national anthem and an opportunity for him to continue attacking NFL players who kneel or otherwise protest during the playing of the anthem before games.
Whether the Capitals will accept an invitation to the White House is unknown, but Washington right winger Devante Smith-Pelly hinted earlier this week that he would not attend an event at Trump’s White House.
“The things that he spews are straight-up racist and sexist,” Smith-Pelly said in an interview earlier this week with Canada’s National Post. “Some of the things he’s said are pretty gross. I’m not too into politics, so I don’t know all his other views, but his rhetoric I definitely don’t agree with.”
“It hasn’t come up here, but I think I already have my mind made up.”
