Samantha Bee, the comedian and political commentator, on Thursday apologized to Ivanka Trump for crossing a line after she used a vulgarity to describe the White House adviser and president’s daughter.
“I would like to sincerely apologize to Ivanka Trump and to my viewers for using an expletive on my show to describe her last night,” Bee said in a statement on Twitter. “It was inappropriate and inexcusable. I crossed a line, and I deeply regret it.”
Bee, on Wednesday evening during her TBS show, “Full Frontal,” criticized President Donald Trump’s policy of separating undocumented families apprehended at the border.
She went on to condemn a tweet that Ivanka Trump had posted earlier this week with her and her son, dubbing it “the second most oblivious tweet we’ve seen this week.”
“You know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another, do something about your dad’s immigration practices, you feckless c***!” Bee said during her monologue.
“He listens to you,” she continued. “Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to f***ing stop it. Tell him it was an Obama thing and see how it goes, OK?”
TBS, which is owned by Time Warner, issued an apology on Thursday afternoon, saying it, too, made a mistake for airing the comment.
“Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night,” the channel wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”
Bee’s comments came a day after Roseanne Barr made a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a longtime adviser and close friend of former President Barack Obama. Barr’s show, “Roseanne,” was subsequently canceled by ABC. Barr apologized for her comment, but later caused more controversy by propagating unsubstantiated conspiracy theories online.
The White House on Thursday was quick to condemn Bee’s comments – in contrast to the way the administration handled Barr’s racist remarks.
“The language used by Samantha Bee last night is vile and vicious,” press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. “The collective silence by the left and its media allies is appalling. Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast, and executives at Time Warner and TBS must demonstrate that such explicit profanity about female members of this administration will not be condoned on its network.”
The White House on Wednesday called Barr’s comment “inappropriate,” but mostly focused on how ABC owes an apology to the White House for airing derogatory statements about the Trump administration.
