Melania Trump’s popularity has climbed significantly since the New Year, as the first lady has elevated her public presence in recent months and weathered numerous reports regarding her husband’s alleged infidelity.
The number of Americans who view the former supermodel favorably increased to 57 percent in May, up from 47 percent in January, according to a new CNN/SSRS poll.
Notably, the number of Democrats with positive feelings toward the first lady surged 15 points since January, and female support for the first lady increased by 13 points – meaning a majority of women, 54 percent, now view her favorably.
Melania’s uptick in approval comes as the first lady has cultivated a perception of personal and professional independence in the White House, occasionally abstaining from accompanying President Donald Trump to official events and taking on a broader slate of responsibilities with the help of her East Wing staff.
Last month, the first lady spearheaded orchestrating the first official state dinner of the Trump administration, planning every aspect of an opulent meal in the White House’s State Dining Room to celebrate President Emmanuel Macron of France and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
And on Monday, the first lady unveiled the list of initiatives she plans to champion during her husband’s first term, including cyberbullying and the well-being of children.
Following reports in January that President Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paid porn actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to prevent her from discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump from 2006, the first lady broke from longstanding tradition and arrived at her husband’s first State of the Union address with her guests in her own motorcade.
The first lady also skipped a trip with the president that month to the annual economic forum in Davos, Switzerland, which she was originally scheduled to attend.
The CNN/SSRS poll surveyed a national sample of 1,015 adults from May 2 to 5 via cellphones and landlines. The findings have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
