House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Friday demanded that Robert Mueller halt his investigation, arguing that politically charged text messages FBI agent Peter Strzok sent during the separate bureau probe into Hillary Clinton’s emails discredited the special counsel’s work.
“If this was in a court of law, they would throw this case out. I think the Mueller investigation has got to stop,” the California Republican told the hosts of “Fox and Friends.”
In the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General report into the FBI’s handling of the Clinton email case, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz and his staff found that five FBI employees assigned to the Clinton email case exchanged texts or instant messages that were hostile to Trump or supported Clinton.
In the hours following the watchdog report’s release on Thursday, several of President Donald Trump’s closest allies have brandished a specific exchange between Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page as evidence of widespread bias against the president within the most senior echelons of America’s top law enforcement agency.
Trump’s "not ever going to become president, right? Right?!" Page asked Strzok via text on Aug. 8, 2016.
"No. No, he won’t. We’ll stop it," replied Strzok, who was deeply involved in both the Clinton email investigation and Mueller’s separate probe of Russian election interference. The two federal employees were carrying out an extramarital affair during the campaign.
Mueller booted Strzok from his team of top investigators in July after it was revealed that he had exchanged texts with another FBI agent criticizing the president.
“The most damning of all of this is the person they had in charge, the most biased person there is – Peter Strzok – he wanted President Trump to lose 100 million-to-one. He told his girlfriend that he was going to make sure that he could,” McCarthy said. “This is the inside of the FBI, the highest levels, and those in charge of an investigation that should end after the millions of dollars they have already spent.”
