The top two Democratic lawmakers on Thursday called on President Donald Trump to release a plan to quickly reunite undocumented children who authorities separated from their parents at the border.
“It seems that the administration lacks a plan, intention, and a sense of urgency to begin reuniting these children – many of whom have suffered serious emotional anguish – with their parents,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote in a letter to Trump.
“The administration has the authority and the resources to immediately begin the process of family reunification,” the letter continued. “Any delay in doing so is simply unacceptable. We request that the administration present its plan to Congress and the country as soon as possible, and immediately begin steps to implement it."
The letter comes a day after Trump signed an executive order that temporarily halted his policy of separating children from their parents at the border, including those seeking asylum from gang violence and other issues.
Trump, however, has put blame on Democrats for not passing a new immigration bill, even though the president’s party controls both chambers of Congress.
Pelosi and Schumer said a plan introduced by the Trump administration must include steps to fully undo the “zero tolerance” policy, which resulted in the separation of parents and children coming over the border illegally. In addition, the lawmakers also want the plan to include immediate action to reunify families and to present alternatives to detention.
“For the sake of the children, we strongly urge you to begin this process today,” the letter concluded.
