Brad Parscale, manager of President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, on Tuesday called for the ouster of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and an end to special counsel Robert Mueller’s sprawling Russia probe.
In a terse tweet, Parscale said the Justice Department’s recently released inspector general report on the handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation gives Trump all the evidence he needs to take the highly controversial actions.
“Time to fire Sessions End the Mueller investigation You can’t obstruct something that was phony against you The IG report gives @realDonaldTrump the truth to end it all,” Parscale wrote.
Trump and his allies have seized on the report to argue that the Mueller probe is hopelessly corrupt and that the findings exonerate the president. However, the main conclusion of the report was that political bias did not affect the outcome of the Clinton probe, but that former FBI director James Comey broke from protocol.
The report did not touch on the validity of the separate Mueller probe, which is examining whether Trump campaign aides colluded with Russian officials trying to sway the election and whether Trump tried to obstruct justice.
It’s not clear how much influence Parscale’s message will have on Trump. The president has long had a fraught relationship with Sessions and has regularly criticized him publicly for recusing himself from the Russia investigation.
