Wednesday morning, the former Trump campaign manager complained on Twitter that there was "lots of Fake News today" regarding his remark the previous evening, in which he said he simply "mocked a liberal who attempted to politicize children as opposed to discussing the real issue which is fixing a broken immigration system.
Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Tuesday night snidely remarked “womp womp” after a fellow Fox News panelist made mention Tuesday of a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome separated from her parents by a controversial Trump administration policy.
Lewandowski’s remark earned a heated “how dare you?” from fellow panelist and Democratic strategist Zac Petkanas, who had raised the plight of the 10-year-old girl and her family.
Lewandowski then interjected that “you can pick anything you want out, but the bottom line is very clear, when you cross the border illegally, you have given up the rights of this country.”

Lewandowski also said it was "offensive" that the media "doesn’t want to talk about the fact these policies were started under Obama," even though the policy of referring all illegal border-crossers for criminal prosecution – thereby separating families who cross illegally together seeking asylum – was rolled out last month as a directive from Trump’s Justice Department.
"Look, I don’t know the young girl that Zac referenced. I was mocking Zac, a liberal Democrat national committee activist who is doing nothing but politicizing the issue of making an example of one particular child," Lewandowski told Fox News Wednesday morning, arguing that more media attention should be paid to the victims of crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. "Nobody wants to see children separated from their parents. But the parents have to understand when they come to this country illegally, those are the consequences."
Earlier in the day Tuesday, before Lewandowski’s "womp womp" TV appearance, Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray brought attention to the same girl, whose case he called "particularly painful."
The girl and her brother were sent to a shelter in McAllen, Texas, while their mother was sent to a detention center an hour away in Brownsville, Texas, Videgaray said, according to CNN.
The Mexican foreign minister said his nation’s consulate in McAllen was working to reunite the children with their father, who is a legal U.S. resident.
Lewandowski remains a Trump confidant and informal adviser, and recently entered Vice President Mike Pence’s circle when he joined Pence’s political action committee.
Pence’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
