President Donald Trump on Friday questioned why "disgraced" former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is not "being investigated" for donations his wife accepted from an ally of Hillary Clinton in her bid for a seat in the Virginia state Legislature.
The president has long criticized McCabe for what he perceives as bias in his handling of federal probes into the 2016 elections, often citing the fact that his wife, Jill McCabe, accepted money in 2015 from a super PAC of former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a close ally to Clinton, Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign rival.
"Why isn’t disgraced FBI official Andrew McCabe being investigated for the $700,000 Crooked Hillary Democrats in Virginia, led by Clinton best friend Terry M (under FBI investigation that they killed) gave to McCabe’s wife in her run for office? Then dropped case on Clinton!" the president wrote on Twitter.
The decision to oust McCabe was informed by a report by Department of Justice inspector General Michael Horowitz, who concluded that McCabe made unauthorized disclosures to the media and later misled federal investigators on the matter.
According to the report, McCabe was less than forthcoming with former FBI Director James Comey about his decision to allow two FBI officials in October 2016, just a month out from the presidential election, to speak to The Wall Street Journal about the bureau’s probes into Clinton. McCabe has disputed the findings, saying his disclosures were authorized.
The inspector general referred the case on McCabe to federal prosecutors. However, it remains unlcear whether they are actively pursuing a case against him.
In a series of missives in mid-April, Trump accused McCabe and Comey of committing "many crimes," tweeting that the former FBI deputy director "LIED! LIED! LIED!" and calling the DOJ watchdog report a "total disaster".
McCabe was fired in March by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, ousting the longtime bureau official just hours before he was set to retire and collect his full benefits.
