Amid furious White House attempts to crack down on leaking, Sen. Chuck Grassley wondered aloud on Twitter on Monday about President Donald Trump’s own tweeting habits.
“Since the WH leaks like a sieve will 1 of the leakers tell me Does @POTUS do his own tweeting? Or does someone help him? Or does he dictate into the microphone?” the Iowa Republican wrote. “He’s much more prolific than I am.”
Grassley, like Trump, has long staked out unique turf on Twitter, though not at quite the same level of output. He frequently tweets direct, public requests to Trump. In January, HuffPost ran an article exploring “Chuck Grassley’s Yearlong, One-Sided Twitter Conversation With President Trump,” which it called “the last truly pure thing online.”
The latest round of the Trump administration’s internal recriminations on leaking came last week, after politicians across the spectrum rebuked White House aide Kelly Sadler for joking about Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) dying.
Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reportedly slammed staff for leaking the remark and then said, “I am sure this conversation is going to leak, too” – which it promptly did, to ABC News and Axios.
Trump, who forged his political identity online long before he ran for president, has racked up more than 37,000 tweets – compared to fewer than 7,000 from Grassley, many of which are cross-posted from his Instagram account.
At 71 and 84, neither Trump nor Grassley is a digital native. But the senator frequently employs text-message abbreviations or eschews punctuation. His most recent non-Instagram tweet offered a “big thank u” to Iowa teachers.
