President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned of “very severe consequence” if Iran relaunched its nuclear program after he vowed to pull the U.S. out of the landmark deal, adding that he “would advise them very strongly” against restarting the program.
Asked about the possibility, Trump said “Iran will find out” his course of action if they take such an action.
"They’re going to find out. I don’t think they should do that,” Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting. “I would advise Iran not to start their nuclear program. I would advise them very strongly.”
The president added: “If they do, there will be very severe consequence."
Trump on Tuesday said he would impose “the highest level” of economic sanctions against Tehran, dealing a grievous blow to the breakthrough nuclear agreement reached by former President Barack Obama. Critics warned that the action could create a diplomatic crisis and exacerbate conflicts in the volatile region.
Several European leaders voiced disappointment over the U.S. decision on Tuesday, while close allies to Trump, such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, cheered on the decision.
Both as a candidate and since entering office, the president has derided the deal, arguing it could allow Iran to quickly produce a nuclear bomb once the deal’s provisions expire.
In response to Trump’s announcement, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said during an address Tuesday that he had ordered his foreign minister to begin negotiating with other countries to salvage the deal, according to The Associated Press.
He added that if those talks fail, Iran will once against enrich uranium “more than before . in the next weeks.”
